Farming In Protected Landscapes Programme

"Economic pressures on agriculture are a factor that could affect use and function of the Lake District landscape and may need to be addressed through mechanisms including encouraging farm diversification and agricultural subsidy"

Technical evaluation of the future World Heritage nomination for the English Lake District (The Lake District World Heritage Project Partnership, 2013, pg.11)

With encouragement from our landlord and part funding from the Farming in Protected Landscape Programme going forward we are able to explore opportunities for diversification without sacrificing our core purpose - the rearing of quality stock and sustainable land management.

With part funding from FIPL we aim to:

  • Promote the farm and engage with the public via the website

  • Explore limited windows in the faming calendar year of 2024 that provide sporadic opportunities for guided farm tours

  • Develop a brand with local Lakeland provenance

We hope to enhance the experience of a very small proportion of visitors that already flock to the village of Sawrey with minimal carbon footprint and requirement for commercial development.

In the future the launch of Hill Top Herdwick meat boxes sold directly (subject to seasonal availability and limited number) will be our minute role in encouraging the public to support local and most importantly support the British farming industry.
